Senator Schumer Urges FDA and FTC to Further Regulate Nicotine Pouches

He calls Zyn product “quiet and dangerous.“

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York has called for the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission to take action on the marketing practices and health effects of the Zyn nicotine pouches. While the company markets to users over 21 and claims that it meets or exceeds industry regulations, Senator Schumer voiced concerns that it could become a “trend in addiction for teens.”

“Amid federal action against e-cigs and their grip on young people, a quiet and dangerous alternative has emerged and it is called Zyn,” Senator Schumer said. “The amount of nicotine is highly addictive and much more needs to be done to understand and communicate the health risks for young people.”

Some members of Congress are not keen on prohibiting the alternative to smoking. Senator Mike Braun of Indiana stated, “Where there’s a health care consideration, everybody has to look at that.” But he added, “I don’t like the government banning stuff either.”

“I know for a fact our service members and emergency responders use Zyn as an alternative to tobacco to help stay alert,” stated Representative Mike Waltz of Florida. “This is a massive overreach.”

In the meantime, President Biden’s administration has delayed an FDA ban on menthol cigarettes that was supposed to take place in December of 2023 until at least March of this year.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Schumer as he heads the majority party in the Senate to be prudent in his priorities for the nation.
  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they consider the health ramifications of nicotine in its various forms.
  • For the leaders of the FDA and FTC as they consider the Senate majority leader’s call to action against the nicotine pouches.
